On 23rd November, 1914, the 1st Connaught Rangers battalion of the Ferozepore Brigade, Lahore Division of the Indian Army were ordered to leave their billets in Zelobes and move immediately to Gorre and then on to Festubert to support the Gurkhas in an attack at 4.30pm. The attack was a failure and resulted in over 100 casualties for the battalion. It was met with fierce machine-gun fire and could get no further so a withdrawal back to the starting line was carried out. At some stage of the fighting Lionel Thurkle was killed.
